Want to get started with echocardiography in general practice, but confounded by cardiac ultrasound?

Then this course is here to help start you on your echo expeditions and improve your practical scanning ability.

This one-day course is a mixture of lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions, with an emphasis on getting as much hands-on time as possible. Topics covered include a re-cap of ultrasound physics and machine setup, the indications for echocardiography and the equipment needed. The place for echocardiography in general practice will be explored.

In small groups, you will practice and refine your right sided echocardiographic views, and learn how to interpret them. You will be able to practice with a range of machines and dogs, in a relaxing, supportive and informal environment.

What you will learn:

  • Relevant ultrasound physics – how ultrasound works, what it can and cannot do and how to use the machine to optimise your cardiac images
  • Indications for echocardiography – when to use it and why
  • How to perform a basic right-sided echo exam, to include long axis and short axis views
  • An introduction to Doppler ultrasonography
  • The normal appearance of the cardiac anatomy and how to spot pathological changes
  • How to perform and interpret cardiac measurements such as LA:Ao and M mode

Places on each practical training session are strictly limited to 12 delegates and will be further limited based upon the number of dogs available for training. Delegates are kindly requested to bring a dog with them for the duration of the course day, if possible. It is important that the dogs can be clipped as required for an abdominal ultrasound examination.

Every delegate who brings a dog that can be examined on the course day will be gifted a £50 Amazon Voucher.
